What is World Hunger Day?

Hun・ger

noun

a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by a lack of food, coupled with a desire to eat.

Any dictionary will tell you the definition of hunger; however, words on a page can’t quite capture the pain of millions who suffer from hunger every day. If you are like me, you may think to yourself, what is to be done? Who am I to make a difference? The creators of World Hunger Day asked themselves similar questions. Those behind The Hunger Project started the World Hunger Day initiative to raise awareness of the constant presence of hunger that plagues the world.

To date, about 821 million people do not have enough to eat. Around 60% of this number are women. Hunger kills more people than AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria combined. These are the facts we see on the World Hunger Day website. This day is set apart to call these statistics to our attention. Through raising awareness, the goal of this movement is to empower people, provide assistance, and then step out of the way and let those they help be self sufficient. This is the day to bring the issue of hunger to the forefront and tackle it head on.

Those at World Hunger say that we can join the fight against hunger “ … by [investing] in people around the world working to sustainably end hunger, poverty, and gender inequality.” This World Hunger Day’s theme is to promote sustainability, and to provide you and I with opportunities to help those around the world.

Rice Love also shares this goal. Here at Rice Love, we strive to support those individuals and families that are going to bed hungry on a daily basis. Through the funds earned by the purchase of our products, we are committed to actively fight against hunger. For every bag you buy, Rice Love donates 1 kilo of rice to a family in need. We have given 50,000 kilos of rice, and this number is growing! You can make a difference in the lives others. Let's celebrate World Hunger Day together!  Help a family though your contribution today.
